Building and Energy has released its 2026–27 Proactive Audit Priorities Statement, outlining the areas of the building industry that will be a focus of regulatory oversight during the coming year.
Through this program of targeted audits and inspections, Building and Energy actively monitors whether registered building contractors, building surveyors and building engineers are complying with their obligations under Western Australia's building services legislation and meeting the relevant building standards.
As Members know, registered building service providers are expected to maintain appropriate standards of professional practice and workmanship, exercise due diligence and ensure their work complies with legislative and technical requirements. Where Building and Energy’s audits identify potential non-compliance, they may undertake further investigation and are able then to take regulatory action where warranted.
Building contractors
Inspections of residential building projects at key stages of construction to assess whether work is being carried out in accordance with approved plans, relevant standards and legislative requirements.
Building surveyors
Assessments of Certificates of Design Compliance and supporting documentation to examine the adequacy of compliance assessments and the evidence relied upon to support certification.
Building engineers
Reviews of structural engineering designs and fire safety performance solutions for commercial and public buildings to assess compliance with legislative and technical requirements.
Additional compliance activities
Building and Energy will also examine:
performance solutions used in residential building approvals and whether completed building work aligns with approved designs;
whether ancillary accommodation (granny flat) projects comply with applicable standards and approval requirements;
fire services installations in recently completed commercial and public buildings; and
disability access requirements in buildings required to provide accessible facilities and pathways.
