The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is inviting industry stakeholders to provide feedback on a consultation paper exploring how a registration and licensing framework for carpenters could operate in Victoria.
DTP are seeking feedback on registration and licence classes, exemptions, transition arrangements, and what objectives a licensing scheme should seek to achieve, as well as ensuring any future scheme is practical, effective and informed by industry and consumer experience.
In particular, DTP is seeking to recognise existing skills and experience, maintain workforce capacity, minimise unnecessary regulatory burden, and improve consumer protection.
The consultation focuses on carpenters, however SPASA understands the proposed framework is likely to be expanded to other building trades in the future. These trades may include waterproofing and welding, which adds further weight to the importance of getting this consultation right, if the things decided now are likely to be expanded upon into the future.
Members are encouraged to review the consultation paper and provide your feedback via written submission or the DTP online survey by 11 October 2026.
In addition to making a submission, stakeholders will be able to participate in a stakeholder consultation session. DTP will send a meeting invitation will be sent separately with details of the session, which will provide an opportunity to discuss the consultation paper and share your views directly with the Department.
Your feedback will play an important role in shaping the development of a registration and licensing scheme, starting with carpenters.
