Standards Australia have recently published AS 2783 – Use of Reinforced Concrete for Small Swimming Pools, providing industry with access to an update for this outdated standard. This new edition is the result of SPASA’s continued commitment to raising professional and technical standards across the swimming pool and spa industry.
As the proponent for this standard and an active member of the Standards Committee responsible for revising AS 2783, SPASA is proud to support this long-overdue update.
Kristin Brookfield, SPASA Chief Executive Officer, said: “The revision of this 33-year-old standard represents a vital step forward for the industry. It lifts the construction benchmark and reinforces best-practice standards that enhances durability, and quality across concrete swimming pool projects.”
The updated standard was published on 20 June 2025. It is not currently referenced in legislation, however the Standards can be given legal effect when referenced in building plans, specifications or preferably the building contract. While the standard cannot be used retrospectively, members should consider including a reference to the standard in new contracts.
This updated standard outlines structural design and construction requirements for small concrete swimming pools up to 16.7m in length and width, built using pneumatically applied reinforced concrete, whether fully or partially in-ground. It includes comprehensive guidance on design and supervision, materials, construction tolerances, jointing, curing, embedments in concrete, loads, allowable stresses for crack control, and other critical technical details.
This latest publication follows the recent updates to AS 1838 & AS 1839 – Fibreglass Pool Manufacturing and Installation Standards in 2021.
We are awaiting the release of the New Zealand Standards for Fibreglass Pools (NZS/AS 1838 & NZS/AS 1839), which are expected later this year.
SPASA Builder Members are encouraged to access the standard via SPASA’s exclusive Standards Subscription Service, offering discounted access to key industry standards and helping professionals stay current, compliant, and competitive.
