General Building Licensing Information

QUEENSLAND

The process of getting a Builders' license in Queensland is managed and regulated by Queensland Building and Construction Commission.

Licensing

An individual or company who wants to carry out, undertake to carry out, or supervise building work valued at over $3,300 (including labour and materials) must hold the appropriate license.

Licensees who do not contract with builders or the public and only contract to trade contractors (i.e. sub-trade contractors) do not require a QBCC license.

License Types

  • Builder - Low Rise
  • Builder - Medium Rise
  • Builder - Open

License Application

Experience

Qualified in bricklaying/block laying or carpentry

Two years’ experience in:

  • the license class scope of work, or
  • other work the commission is satisfied with is at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for the class.

All other applicants

Four years experience in:

  • the license class scope of work, or
  • other work the commission is satisfied with is at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for the class.

Qualifications

For Builder (Low Rise): Any one of the following –

  1. successful completion of Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40110;For more information on this qualification please click here
  2. successful completion of a course the commission considers is at least equivalent to the course mentioned in paragraph (a);
  3. a recognition certificate as a builder qualified to carry out the scope of work for the license class;
  4. a qualification or statement of attainment of required competency for the class of license.

Note:   Other qualifications are required for other building license classes.

Financial requirements

The QBCC has various Financial Reporting Requirements:

  • Financial reporting requirements for Self-Certifying 1 and 2 – Maximum Revenue up to $600,000
  • Financial reporting requirements for Category 1-3 (Maximum revenue between $600,001 - $30,000,000)
  • Financial reporting requirements for Category 4-7 (Maximum revenue more than $30,000,001)

Building Insurance Requirements

Home Warranty Insurance is payable on work with a market value over $3,300.
